‘I don’t know the answer to that question’: a corpus-assisted discourse analysis of White House Press Briefings

White House Press Briefings, daily meetings with the press held by the White House Press Secretary, are the main information conduit for the White House (Kumar 2007). They are considered a “political chess game” where the Press Secretary and the press face a “wrestling match” (Partington 2006: 16). Our analysis is carried out on a corpus comprising all the Press Briefings across three presidencies from Clinton to Obama. The additional mark-up includes information about individual speakers and their role, allowing us to compare different discourse strategies adopted by the participants in the briefings at different points in time. Il contributo mira a esaminare le relazioni vigenti tra le opere tolkieniane e l’Eneide di Virgilio, con particolare riferimento al motivo mitico del viaggio. Dal confronto ragionato tra l’epos latino e la mitopoiesi di Tolkien si intende sviluppare un’analisi dei temi principali riguardanti i motivi del viaggio e dell’esilio: il fardello del potere e dell’eletto del fato (Enea fato profugus e Aragorn Re Ramingo), con attenzione a Enea, spossato dai labores e asservito al volere dei fata, e al ritorno di Aragorn come Re. The prominent position of English in medical research makes term accuracy a very important feature in the successful transmission of meanings. Accuracy refers to the correctness of a term; it represents a very important feature of medical communication together with other principles, such as transparency. The latter is the possibility of immediately decoding the meaning of a term through an analysis of its surface form. Transparency does not always overlap with accuracy.
